Resize opening headers and fit their studs

Set generated header sections or update selected rectangular openings across one or both storeys.

Set the generator’s header section

In Build > Building > Walls > Advanced, find Load-bearing headers below the stud dimensions. Set height and thickness; the default is 148 × 48 mm. Thickness cannot exceed wall stud depth. These settings apply to rectangular main-wall openings on both storeys when generated and save with the design. They define geometry, not a structural load calculation.

Update existing openings

Right-click an ordinary or load-bearing header and choose Update opening headers. Select the header type, first storey, second storey or both, then check the openings to include. The list belongs to the same building. Each row shows opening width and height, wall number, storey and the existing/proposed header section.

Use Select unedited for untouched headers. Edited headers require deliberate selection; the header used to open the tool starts selected. Hidden checked openings are included. Triangular, tapered, sloping and unsupported openings are excluded.

Enter Header height and Header thickness in millimetres. Each header keeps its own length. Load-bearing headers keep their top edge and flush wall face; ordinary headers keep the opening’s clear height and centre the thickness change. This updates the selected model parts, not the generator defaults.

Fit studs to a deeper or thicker beam

Enable Fit studs to headers to cut additional overlap from each opening’s own studs using its resized header. Existing notches and edits are retained. A beam as thick as the studs removes the whole notch depth, leaving clean shorter supports beneath it rather than a thin face across the beam.

Preview updates shows headers in blue and fitted studs in green. Resolve invalid cuts or exclude the affected opening before applying. Apply updates commits one undoable batch; Cancel leaves the model unchanged. Names, groups and materials remain, and changed parts become independent with an Edited badge.

Shrinking a beam does not fill old cuts. Reset customization or regenerate to restore stock. Later header changes do not automatically refit studs: run the tool again and explicitly include the edited headers. Save/reopen retains exact results; compatible regeneration follows the edited-object review workflow.
