Troubleshoot custom-solid sketches and edits

Check closed regions, sketch planes, extrusion direction and Edit solid availability with a simple repeatable test.

Start with a small working example

Save a checkpoint before investigating a complex solid. Create a simple rectangle in open space and try the same type of operation on it. This helps separate a tool-selection problem from a problem in the original profile.

Keep the active sketch mode, receiving face and intended extrusion direction clear. Add one region or curve at a time and inspect the result before introducing another.

No closed region appears

Check Why it matters What to try
Endpoint closure Lines that look joined can still have a gap Zoom in and snap the final endpoint to the existing one.
Sketch plane Overlapping screen positions may belong to different faces Re-establish one clear receiving face or the intended Grid plane.
Guides versus sketch edges Construction guides are references rather than solid boundaries Convert the required guide to sketch geometry or draw an actual boundary edge.
Duplicate or crossing segments Self-intersections and tiny overlaps can make a profile ambiguous Remove the latest problematic segment and rebuild the boundary simply.
Open curves An arc or spline needs a usable boundary with the rest of the profile Check its endpoints and the line or face edge closing the region.

Wait for the tool to recognize the intended region before attempting Push/Pull. More clicks over the same junction can add ambiguity instead of closing it.

The extrusion goes the wrong way

Distance follows the sketch face’s orientation. Preview a short distance, orbit to inspect the side it occupies and reverse the sign if necessary. For a recess, compare the intended depth with the host thickness. A shallow pocket and a through-cut require different checks on the opposite face.

If faces collapse or an unexpected cut appears, return to the checkpoint and simplify the region. Test one boundary and one distance before trying multiple interacting edits. Cleaning display edges improves linework; it does not repair missing or incorrect volume.

Edit solid is missing

The current viewport menu exposes Edit solid for custom solids identified as Rectangle or Path. Circle and Triangle creation does not imply that the same context-menu editor is available. Generated building members also use their own workflows.

Select the actual solid rather than a helper or a different overlapping object. If an eligible rectangle or path still lacks the action after reopening, retain that file and test a freshly created rectangle for comparison. Do not infer editability from the outline alone.

A traced shape has the wrong size

Calibrate a Grid reference image from a known distance before tracing. Then check a second independent dimension. Calibration establishes scale along the chosen reference; it cannot remove perspective distortion in a photograph. See reference-image calibration.

When reporting an unresolved solid issue, record the shape type, Grid or Face mode, affected face, sketch tools used and entered distance. A small saved example with those steps is more useful than an image of the final failure alone.
